Independence Day Teaparty 7/3/09
It was hot and muggy at Desert Breeze Park in Las Vegas as people gathered for our second teaparty this year. I was there early and encouraged by the number of people there setting up. There were even some media groups wandering around to document the occasion.
What there WASN’T was organized promotion. There was no media promo prior to, and only a tiny paragraph deep inside the local paper. No mailings, no calls, no hoopla. Just some meetup groups and people with similar politics or interest. I had to ask around to see where we were supposed to be going for the 4th, and found out it was really going to be on the 3rd.
There were many who came out last time and didn’t this time around. Some told me because the last teaparty didn’t lead to anything meaningful, that they weren’t energized about this one. Some whined because it is 97 degrees in the shade today, as July in the desert tends to be. Some had family plans on this Friday off, and then there are all the losers who actually had to work on the 3rd of July and couldn’t come if they wanted to.
In any case, I think we are missing the point to some degree. People want these events to be a movement of the people, spontaneous and not organized. They don’t want it to be ‘controlled’ by any one group or political faction. The problem is that people who are passionate about what they believe are most likely already involved in some group or other that is involved politically.
Then there is the truth that without someone organizing, planning, and inviting, nothing will ever happen. So the frustration I carry is that many want these events to grow and be a voice of the people, but we can’t have people organizing people. Is that because unions call what they do ‘organizing’? Why do conservatives and independents suck so bad at carrying a poignant message? Why is it that these groups can’t cooperate and work together?
Why can’t conservatives and libertarians and even independents get together and push forward what they DO agree on and get more accomplished for the good of the state and even the country? We’d rather allow the liberals, socialists, and progressives join forces and overwhelm us? We are in a fight for our survival as a nation and as free people, the stakes are too high to fight over turf and territory.
I was disappointed to learn today that even TV and radio stations that carry a conservative message cannot cross-promote events or causes if they are affiliated with the ‘competition.’ After all, this is ‘business.’ So we have to have other options. I will have more to say about other options in the near future, but for now…. I have to go to work. And I’m thankful that I still have work!
